Somalian-Run Children's Learning Center In Minnesota Now Offering Pirate Courses
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Officials at the Quality Learning Center announced today that their popular after-school enrichment program will now include a brand-new elective: “Introduction to Professional Piracy.”
The course, open to children ages 6–12, promises to teach “essential 21st-century skills” including plank-walking etiquette, treasure-map cryptography, and the proper application of eye patches for both fashion and tactical advantage.
“We noticed many of our students already had a natural talent for boarding vessels and demanding tribute,” explained center director Abdi Hassan during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on the playground slide. “Rather than suppress these God-given abilities, we decided to channel them productively. Somali maritime heritage runs deep—why not give the kids a head start?”
The curriculum, developed in partnership with local Somali elders and one very enthusiastic retired SeaWorld performer, includes weekly modules such as “Yo Ho Ho & the Six Pillars of Emotional Piracy,” “How to Negotiate Ransom Without Crying,” and “Advanced Rum Ration Math (Common Core Aligned).” Parents are especially excited about the final project: a simulated raid on the center’s snack bar, complete with cardboard cutlass swords and gluten-free hardtack.
At publishing time, Children’s Learning Center is also offering lesson on how to fire a bazooka.
