WELLINGTON, NZ — Labour leader Chris Hipkins, now a self-described socialist, said that the nation has decided it is fed up with chasing prosperity, and is open to trying socialism for a while.
Recent polls suggest that thousands of Kiwis are weary of constantly creating more wealth and keeping all of it for themselves. People also seem to be fed up with capitalism.
“The last three years with National establishing a failed prosperity-based system show that people want socialism,” said Hipkins. “We have a lot of experience with saving lives, so now we can turn it against capitalism, which is killing millions of people.”
“Only 2% of people in New Zealand know fully what capitalism and prosperity feels like,” said a woman on X (formerly Twitter). “So we want to feel that through socialism—high universal basic income, free food, free rent, free everything.”
At publishing time, Kiwis are now unsure on socialism, after realising they will have to wait in line longer to get free stuff.
