WELLINGTON, AOTEAROA — National Library has set fire to 500,000 foreign books to clear shelf space for more about Aotearoa, the new official name of the country once called New Zealand.
“It’s time to decolonise our shelves and embrace our true identity,” National Library Director Jessica Moran. “Why do we have to read all about these foreigners? Why can’t we read about our newly found identity?”
The purge includes works by Shakespeare, the Oxford dictionary, every book on economics, all published works of Paul Moon, and everything that’s not in Te Re Māori.
At publishing time, the bonfire is set for next month, with free marshmallows for attendees.
