Matt Doocey, the National MP, donned a protective helmet during parliamentary sessions today, following yesterday’s physical outburst from Green MP Julie Anne Genter.
“These Greenies are getting rowdier by the day,” Doocey reportedly said in a statement. “I decided it was time to invest in a helmet to protect my head from any further outbursts. I mean, you never know when a Green MP might get a little too passionate about roading projects.”
Genter, for her part, has apologised for her behaviour, but the incident has sparked a broader conversation about parliamentary conduct and the need for better protection for MPs. Some have even suggested that all MPs should be required to wear helmets during debates, just in case.
The situation has also led to a surge in helmet sales in New Zealand, with many citizens expressing their support for Doocey by donning their own protective headgear.
