Mark Mitchell Vows Next Cyclone To Hit NZ Will Be Named After An Ethnic Minority
WELLINGTON, NZ — Minister of ethnic communities Mark Mitchell was disappointed to learn yet another cyclone named after a white person. Mitchell criticised the cyclone naming system and vowed that the next major storm will be named after a minority.
“It was really disappointing to find out that they called it Tam. There are a lot great names from our ethnic communities around New Zealand, for instance, Abdul or Singh or Shmuley. We just need to be more considerate and inclusive of our immigrant and ethnic communities, who are frankly New Zealanders and enjoy equal rights.”
The Cyclone Naming Association responded to Mitchell’s request and confirmed they have several ethnic names prioritised for the next cyclone.
At publishing time, MetService reported Cyclone Muhammad will be making its way down to South Island next week.
