WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former FBI Director James Comey launched a spirited defense against his recent indictment for making false statements and obstructing justice.
Comey declared on CNN that, “I didn’t lie under oath. I was just being zesty so my book becomes a bestseller.”
The indictment accuses Comey of fibbing during a 2020 Senate hearing about his role in approving leaks of sensitive information during the FBI’s Russia probe. Prosecutors claim his statements were less than truthful, but Comey insists it was all a misunderstanding.
“Look, I was under pressure to make the hearing pop, as my organic ratings were plummeting,” he told CNN. “You try testifying for hours without throwing in a little creative flair. I was giving the people what they wanted—drama, intrigue, a dash of mystery! PLEASE BUY BOOK”
At publishing time, Comey is planning to launch a book tour in prison once he gets there after sentencing.
